The ARRT technically began in 1922, making it almost 100 years old! Beatrice Merrigan completed a Radiology exam in 1922, and the next month she became the first registered Radiology Technologist.
This started a chain of events, which resulted in the ARRT being formed, as it is today. From 1922 onwards, the ARRT has worked relentlessly to add more exams to their plethora of certifications, all in various different niches of Radiology.
That foresight allows even more radiology specialties to become part of the ARRT. By the late 1960’s, the ARRT had a total of 56,000 accredited members; all of whom could use the ARRT’s credentials on their resumes.
They were the elite radiologists of the time, and were much more likely to be hired than uncertified radiologists, this is because they provided peace of mind to patients, and to employers.
In the 90’s, ARRT changed dramatically. As technology had changed drastically since the 60’s, new disciplines that members must follow were added.
Radiation Therapy was hugely different than it was ever before, so this was absolutely necessary to ensure that the ARRT upheld their mission to recognize talented individuals, and to create a registry of the elite Radiologists within the USA.
